Abstract

Leaders and leadership have been discussed and written about for many years. During this time, different management styles have been developed and created, including transformational leadership, a concept known for exactly 50 years. This style of leadership has proven to be effective in achieving better results both for employees and organisation’s business operations. The aim of our research is to determine whether it can also be applied to nursing care. We used the descriptive work method and a metasynthesis of the examined scientific literature from databases such as Academic Search Elite, CINAHL, dLib, ERIC, Google Scholar, MasterFILE Premier, MEDLIN and PubMed. We included exclusion terms, such as posts from 1978 to 2018, free access to articles across the entire range, and keywords “leader”, “leadership”, “transformational leadership” and “healthcare.” We found that in quite a few countries, transformational leadership is used in the field of nursing, and is considered to be very applicable. It was determined that the working organisation must also support the leader in this leadership style in order for both the leader and the work organisation to gain the recognition and confidence of the employees, and to achieve greatly improved results. Some of the countries are aware that leaders need to be continuously educated and that their education must begin at the level of faculties, in our case, Faculty of Health Sciences, that they should be kept up-to-date with management innovations, and, above all, that work organisations must realise that only a leader who has full top management level support can perform their work in a quality manner.
