Economic Aspects of Pinworm Infections

Abstract

Pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis) are small, about one-centimetre large worms of whitish color that live in the gastrointestinal tract of humans. They are the most common cause of parasitic worm infections, especially in children attending school. Pinworm infection is widespread in the developed world. The number of reported infections in the last decade has been steadily rising, and hence the costs of treatment. In Slovenia, Vermox and Zestaval are used to treat these infections. In the article, we analyzed the data on the consumption of anthelmintic drugs to determine the link between the increase in infection and the cost of medicines. The data is available for mebendazole (Vermox), which is a predominantly prescribed anthelmintic. With the trend analysis, we made a forecast of a further increase in the prevalence of this infection and the associated increase in treatment costs. Of course, it should be borne in mind that the model considers the trend of the increase in infection in recent years, and that many other factors can influence the prevalence of parasitic infection. In the discussion we also describe other costs that are caused by infection besides the costs of treatment.
